Prince of Hands – The Analyst
(Cards of Youth)
Unburdened by the obligations of the duty to rule and lead, the Prince enjoys freedom of thought in his quest for truth. Free to contemplate and explore. Driven by the no longer naïve curiosity to find the origin of things and compile maps of knowledge, devise action strategies, imagine tactics. Hone proficiencies.
There is a context and purpose to his actions, even though they are still imagined and lack substance. There are aspirations and vision and will that encourage perseverance, dedication, and sacrifice. That demands care and patience and gentleness of execution. In this stage, a degree of optimism and idealism is needed. Things have meaning that will come to light when the time comes.
Analysis and inquiry are pseudo-instinctive responses to the shock of encountering the alluring and threatening mystery of the world. An attempt to understand and control.
Analysis disassembles, distinguishes, and isolates, and then connects and reassembles. It produces an explanation, in an attempt to build an essential causal chain between the parts and the whole. Analysis involves time expropriated from life in service of its knowledge. Holding, at a distance, and creating an “impassive” space. A space that requires a degree of indifference to pain and suffering.
A space where unspeakable acts are done in the name of… (Truth? Science? Objectivity?) The inspection and the explanation that take shape through analysis make it possible to uncover and control the means of production and modes of operation and use.
This knowledge allows us to repair what has been broken, to heal what has gotten ill. To ensure the continuation of human existence. Knowledge that is always also knowing ourselves, that connects control with worry, angst with safety. And if so, we must notice the pleasure that comes with knowing and understanding.
Pleasure that eventually renders the action redundant, replacing it with knowledge. Be careful of the “intoxication of power.” Pay attention to the disinterest and indifference at the base of the investigation that turn into cruelty and exploitation and oppression, which can lead to disinterest and indifference to the living and to life. Still, remember that knowledge makes it possible to be spontaneous, to wander off, in the name of curiosity. Will the Prince know to use his power for good?
Knowledge is a privilege.
