Four of Eyes – Schematism
(Structure Cards)
Fixed relation of action based on measurement becomes a schema, a habit. The building blocks of our world that carry meaning and value. Within the fleeting and the changing a possibility of stability emerges. A possibility to create structure and an institution. A possibility to share one’s private view with others.
The abstract shapes we create serve us to act in the face of the chaos in the world. To contain the abundance of experiences and feelings. Like words in language: Schemas of memory and preservation, of invention and discovery. Schematic templates allow (automatic) movement and rapid transitions from one thing to the next. And so, almost without noticing, we are placed in a template, become a template, interchangeable, traceable. A general, confining, indistinct shape. Nothing more than a cliché.
Schematism is based on the ability to break down and rebuild our perceptions. In that sense, schematism opens and highlights the realm of possibilities for the creative action. It underscores our ability to create shapes and structures out of the raw formless multitude of the experience that threatens to overcome us. Schematism allows to grasp and share that which escapes, and eludes, and constantly changes. To create the foundations for touching and sharing – a symbol – a possibility of encounter and hospitality, a possibility to meet the strange, awkward and new, as an old friend.
“Man is nothing but the image of his native landscape.”
